Target EDI Integration

What is Target EDI?

Target EDI covers four programs: Target Retail (store and DC replenishment), Target ADSD (direct store delivery), Target International (import purchase orders), and Target.com Drop-Ship (direct-to-consumer shipping). Each program has its own identifiers, ship notice requirements, and compliance rules.

Tech85 Owl - Bright

Target was one of the first retailers ever connected to our platform. Target runs several distinct supplier programs, and each one has its own identifiers, its own ship notice requirements, and its own compliance rules. Tech85 connects you to the program you’re actually in, keeps you compliant as Target’s guidelines change, and makes sure every order, ship notice, and invoice is accounted for.

Ensure compliance, efficiency, and growth by connecting with Target through Tech85’s custom-fit EDI solutions.

HOW IT WORKS

Your Target EDI connection, explained

Programs we support

Target Retail

Replenishment for Target distribution centers and stores, including store-level allocation and Target’s multiple Retail ASN structures. Documents: 850, 860, 852, 864, 856, 810, 870, 997. Target Retail EDI →

Target ADSD

Direct store delivery, shipping straight to Target stores using a dedicated store-delivery ASN structure. Documents: 850, 860, 864, 856, 810, 997. Target ADSD EDI →

Target International

Import purchase orders into Target’s domestic network, with sub-line, commodity, and allowance information Target’s Retail map doesn’t carry. Currently inbound only — no outbound ASN or invoice. Documents: 850, 860, 864, 997. Target International EDI →

Target.com Drop Ship

Ship Target.com consumer orders directly from your warehouse — a separate parcel-fulfillment workflow from Retail replenishment. Documents: 846, 850, 855, 860, 865, 856, 864, 997. Target.com Drop Ship EDI →

Why Target suppliers choose Tech85

  • We don’t treat Target as one connection. Retail, ADSD, International, and Target.com drop ship are four separate programs with their own identifiers and requirements, and we configure each one on its own terms.
  • ASN structure built for how you actually ship. Target Retail alone supports four distinct ASN structures — pre-distribution, post-distribution, palletized, and direct store delivery — and we build the one your shipment requires.
  • Store-level allocation that stays aligned. When a purchase-order line is split across multiple Target stores, we carry that allocation through from the incoming order to shipment creation, ASN generation, and carton labeling.
  • Labels synchronized with the ASN. Our GS1-128 carton and pallet formats for Target Retail are kept in sync with the advance ship notice, so what’s on the dock matches what Target expects to receive.
  • International orders mapped correctly. Sub-line information, commodity classification, allowances and charges, and buyer information are supported with Target’s own International order mapping, not a generic purchase-order map.
  • Drop-ship handled as its own workflow. Target.com drop ship isn’t Retail with an inventory feed added — it’s a full consumer-fulfillment workflow, and we manage the inventory advice, order acknowledgment, change acknowledgment, and ASN batching requirements it depends on.

How it works

  1. Identify your program. Tell us whether you ship to Target DCs and stores, deliver directly to Target stores, import through Target International, or ship Target.com consumer orders.
  2. We configure your connection. Retail, ADSD, International, and Target.com drop ship each have existing production configurations and Target-specific maps.
  3. We test with Target. Each program is certified against its own document and ASN requirements before going live.
  4. You go live. Orders flow in, and the ASNs, acknowledgments, and invoices appropriate to your program flow back out automatically.

Technical notes

Target Retail and ADSD use a non-standard segment terminator on specific outbound documents — a character that isn’t visible the way an ordinary delimiter is, and one a generically configured EDI translator can get wrong without it being obvious. We store these requirements at the document level rather than assuming the same delimiters across every Target program. Target.com drop ship uses standard delimiters and also enforces Target’s transmission batching requirement for ship notices, rather than allowing unlimited 856 transaction sets to accumulate in a single interchange.

Frequently asked questions

Tech85

How long does it take to become EDI-compliant with a new retailer?
Most Tech85 clients complete EDI onboarding and testing in 6–8 days, compared to the 6–8 weeks common with legacy EDI providers — because setup is handled by our team, not left to you to configure alone.
What if I'm already compliant but want to switch providers?
Tech85 maps your existing trading partner connection during onboarding, so there’s no gap in order processing and no need to renegotiate your relationship with the retailer.

Target

What EDI documents does Target require?
It depends on the program. Target Retail uses the purchase order (850), PO change (860), product activity (852), text message (864), advance ship notice (856), invoice (810), order status (870), and functional acknowledgment (997). ADSD uses a similar set without product activity or order status. Target International currently supports only inbound orders, changes, and acknowledgments — no outbound ASN or invoice. Target.com drop ship adds inventory (846), PO acknowledgment (855), and PO change acknowledgment (865), since it’s a separate consumer-fulfillment workflow.
Does Target use the same EDI connection for every program?
No. Target Retail, ADSD, International, and Target.com drop ship are four separate connections, each with its own Target identifier and transaction requirements. A supplier running more than one program — replenishing Target distribution centers while also shipping Target.com orders directly, for example — needs a connection for each.
What labeling does Target require?
Target Retail uses separate GS1-128 formats for cartons and pallets, kept in sync with the advance ship notice. Target International has its own carton-label configuration. Target.com drop ship doesn’t use Target Retail’s carton and pallet labeling at all — those are consumer parcel shipments, handled with parcel shipping and tracking information instead.
What should suppliers know about Target compliance risk?
Most issues come from treating Target’s programs as interchangeable when they’re not — using the wrong ASN structure for how a Retail shipment was distributed, losing store-level allocation between the purchase order and ship notice, or handling ADSD or drop-ship orders like standard Retail replenishment. We configure each Target program separately, with its own maps and ASN structure, specifically to prevent these issues.
