What is Target Retail EDI?

Target Retail is the replenishment program for Target distribution centers and stores, and the program most suppliers mean when they say “Target EDI.” It supports four distinct advance ship notice structures and can split a single purchase-order line across dozens of individual stores.

Tech85 Owl - Bright

Target Retail is the program most Target suppliers mean when they say “Target EDI,” and it’s one of the most exacting in retail. Orders can split a single line across dozens of stores. Target expects a different ship notice depending on how the freight is distributed. Cartons and pallets carry different labels. We’ve been connecting suppliers to Target Retail for years, and every one of those requirements is already built into our platform.

Ensure compliance, efficiency, and growth by connecting with Target Retail through Tech85’s custom-fit EDI solutions.

What we handle for you

  • The right ship notice for every shipment. Target uses four ASN structures: pre-distribution, post-distribution, palletized, and direct store delivery. Each has a different hierarchy and different carton identification. We build the correct one from how the shipment was actually packed and distributed, so your team never has to choose.
  • Store-level distribution. Pre-distributed Target orders break a single line into quantities for individual stores. We carry that allocation from the order through the ship notice and onto each carton label, so the right quantity reaches the right store.
  • Carton and pallet labels. Target requires separate GS1-128 formats for cartons and pallets. We maintain both and apply the right one by pack type.
  • Order validation at intake. Target purchase order numbers follow a fixed format. We validate every order on receipt, so a bad reference is caught on day one instead of surfacing as a deduction weeks later.
  • Summary invoicing. Target Retail invoices are grouped and keyed the way Target reconciles payment, which keeps invoices matching and deductions down.

How it works

  1. Confirm your program. You ship to Target distribution centers or stores.
  2. We configure your connection. Your vendor identifiers go into our existing, tested Target Retail setup.
  3. We certify with Target. Typically orders and changes in; ship notices, invoices, and acknowledgments out; plus product activity or order status if your program uses them.
  4. You go live. Orders flow in, and everything Target expects back flows out automatically.

Technical notes

Target Retail uses a non-printing segment terminator on outbound invoices, ship notices, and order status documents. It’s invisible in a text editor and breaks translators that assume standard delimiters. We configure it per document. Our Target specification library includes Target’s published guidelines for every retail document, the current store and DC address file, and ASN mapping revisions through 2026. If you also ship ADSD, import, or Target.com drop-ship, each is a separate connection.

Frequently asked questions

Tech85

How long does it take to become EDI-compliant with a new retailer?
Most Tech85 clients complete EDI onboarding and testing in 6–8 days, compared to the 6–8 weeks common with legacy EDI providers — because setup is handled by our team, not left to you to configure alone.
What if I'm already compliant but want to switch providers?
Tech85 maps your existing trading partner connection during onboarding, so there’s no gap in order processing and no need to renegotiate your relationship with the retailer.
