What is Kohl’s EDI?

Kohl’s EDI covers two programs: Kohl’s Retail, replenishment for Kohl’s stores and distribution centers, and Kohls.com Drop-Ship, where suppliers ship customer orders through CommerceHub or DSCO. Retail uses purchase orders, ship notices, and invoices — but unlike most retailers, it skips the purchase order acknowledgment entirely.

Tech85 Owl - Bright

Kohl’s was one of the first dozen retailers ever connected to our platform, and we’ve supported Kohl’s suppliers through every change since, including Kohls.com’s move from CommerceHub to DSCO. Kohl’s runs two distinct supplier programs with different documents, different labeling, and different connections. Tech85 sets you up on the program you’re in and manages every document Kohl’s sends and expects back.

Ensure compliance, efficiency, and growth by connecting with Kohl’s through Tech85’s custom-fit EDI solutions.

Why Kohl’s suppliers choose Tech85

  • Both Kohl’s programs, already built. Retail and drop-ship are both live on our platform. Your setup is configuration, not development.
  • Store and DC relationships kept in sync. Kohl’s sends a file that maps stores to distribution centers. We use it so your orders, ship notices, and labels always agree on where freight is going.
  • Labels that match the ship notice. Kohl’s retail cartons carry GS1-128 labels that must match the ASN. We generate both from the same shipment data.
  • Remittance you can reconcile. We bring Kohl’s remittance advice into your system, so payments and deductions tie back to the invoices they belong to.
  • Drop-ship inventory that keeps Kohls.com selling. We automate the inventory feed, so Kohls.com always knows what you can ship.
  • Current specifications. We maintain Kohl’s retail mapping guides, the drop-ship specification, and the packing slip guides alongside your connection.

How it works

  1. Identify your program. Tell us whether you ship to Kohl’s DCs and stores, Kohls.com customers, or both.
  2. We configure your connection. Your Kohl’s identifiers go into a connection that’s already built and tested.
  3. We test with Kohl’s. Each document is certified before production.
  4. You go live. Orders flow in, and ship notices, invoices, and inventory flow out automatically.

Technical notes

Kohl’s Retail runs on the retail industry’s X12 4010 standard. Kohl’s doesn’t use a purchase order acknowledgment for retail orders, so we don’t send one. Drop-ship runs through CommerceHub or DSCO with its own identifiers, separate from retail.

Frequently asked questions

Tech85

How long does it take to become EDI-compliant with a new retailer?
Most Tech85 clients complete EDI onboarding and testing in 6–8 days, compared to the 6–8 weeks common with legacy EDI providers — because setup is handled by our team, not left to you to configure alone.
What if I’m already compliant but want to switch providers?
Tech85 maps your existing trading partner connection during onboarding, so there’s no gap in order processing and no need to renegotiate your relationship with the retailer.

Kohl’s

What EDI documents does Kohl’s require?
For retail, Kohl’s sends purchase orders (850), changes (860), product activity (852), store and DC relationships (816), remittance (820), routing instructions (754), and notifications (864). Suppliers send ship notices (856), invoices (810), and functional acknowledgments (997). For Kohls.com drop-ship, the core documents are the purchase order (850), inventory (846), ship confirmation (856), and functional acknowledgment (997).
What is the Kohl’s vendor portal?
Kohl’s uses K-Link for vendor registration and product content, including item attributes, images, and packaging details. K-Link works alongside EDI. It doesn’t replace it.
What labeling does Kohl’s require?
Retail cartons require a GS1-128 label that matches the ship notice. Kohls.com drop-ship orders use Kohl’s packing slip instead of a carton label.
What causes Kohl’s compliance problems?
The most common issues are labels that don’t match the ship notice, ship notices that don’t agree with Kohl’s store and DC assignments, and drop-ship orders handled on the retail connection. Our Kohl’s setup is built to prevent each of these.
