What is Amazon Direct Fulfillment EDI?

Amazon Direct Fulfillment is the program where Amazon sells a product and the supplier ships it directly to the consumer under Amazon’s name. It runs on its own EDI connection, separate from Vendor Central, exchanging the 850, 855, 856, 810, 846, and 997 — and it depends entirely on an accurate inventory feed, since Amazon only sends orders against inventory it can see.

Tech85 Owl - Bright

With Direct Fulfillment, Amazon sells the product and you ship it straight to the customer. That changes everything about the order: it’s addressed to a person, it may be a gift, and it only arrives if Amazon can see your inventory. Tech85 connects you to Direct Fulfillment and keeps every part of that cycle running, from the inventory feed to the final invoice.

Ensure compliance, efficiency, and growth by connecting with Amazon Direct Fulfillment through Tech85’s custom-fit EDI solutions.

What we handle for you

  • Inventory that keeps orders flowing. Amazon only sends Direct Fulfillment orders against inventory it can see. We automate full and partial inventory feeds from your system, so Amazon always has an accurate picture of what you can ship.
  • Consumer and gift orders. Direct Fulfillment orders carry the customer’s address, Amazon’s order number, the requested ship method, and, on gift orders, the recipient and gift message. We bring all of it into your system, so gifts ship with the right message and without a price on the packing slip.
  • Acknowledgments for every scenario. Amazon expects a specific response when a line can’t be filled: out of stock, invalid item, unsupported ship method, or fill-or-kill. We send the response Amazon’s program calls for, line by line.
  • Ship confirmations, including short shipments. When a shipment goes out short, Amazon needs to know which quantity isn’t coming. Our ship confirmations report partial and full shortages alongside carton tracking.
  • Amazon carton labels. Direct Fulfillment cartons carry Amazon’s labeling, not a generic marketplace slip. We generate them to Amazon’s specification.

How it works

  1. Confirm your program. You ship Amazon’s customer orders from your own warehouse.
  2. We configure your connection. Direct Fulfillment has its own connection, separate from Vendor Central.
  3. We start with inventory. Amazon certifies the inventory feed first, then orders, acknowledgments, and ship confirmations.
  4. You go live. Orders flow in as Amazon sells your products, and confirmations flow back automatically.

Technical notes

Direct Fulfillment is a separate EDI connection from Vendor Central, with its own identifier. Vendors on both programs need both connections. Our Direct Fulfillment specification library is built around Amazon’s own test scenarios, including gift orders, fill-or-kill, invalid items, and full and partial shortages across multi-carton shipments.

Frequently asked questions

Tech85

How long does it take to become EDI-compliant with a new retailer?
Most Tech85 clients complete EDI onboarding and testing in 6–8 days, compared to the 6–8 weeks common with legacy EDI providers — because setup is handled by our team, not left to you to configure alone.
What if I'm already compliant but want to switch providers?
Tech85 maps your existing trading partner connection during onboarding, so there’s no gap in order processing and no need to renegotiate your relationship with the retailer.

Amazon Direct Fulfillment

What EDI documents does Amazon Direct Fulfillment require?
The 846 inventory advice, 850 purchase order, 855 acknowledgment, 856 ship confirmation, 810 invoice, and 997 functional acknowledgment. The inventory feed comes first — Amazon only sends orders against inventory it can see.
How does Direct Fulfillment handle gift orders?
Direct Fulfillment orders can carry the recipient’s address, Amazon’s order number, and, on gift orders, a separate gift recipient and gift message. We bring all of it into your system, so gifts ship with the right message and without a price on the packing slip.
What happens when a Direct Fulfillment order can’t be filled as requested?
Amazon expects a specific acknowledgment response for each scenario — out of stock, invalid item, unsupported ship method, or fill-or-kill. We send the response Amazon’s program calls for, line by line, rather than a generic rejection.
Is Direct Fulfillment the same connection as Amazon Vendor Central?
No. Direct Fulfillment is a separate EDI connection with its own identifier. Suppliers who sell wholesale to Amazon and also fulfill Amazon’s customer orders directly need both connections.
